Together We Thrive: Youth and Education in the Fight to Make Room for Life

As we celebrate World Clean Up Day, we reflect on the essential role that education and youth engagement play in tackling environmental challenges, particularly plastic pollution. Through the collaborative efforts of Project CAP, we are witnessing how young leaders and school initiatives are uniting to create cleaner, more sustainable communities.

At the core of Project CAP is the belief that youth involvement is also crucial for fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment. By advocating for sustainable practices and actively participating in their communities, these young leaders are shaping the future of waste management.

Our initiative has selected a cohort of 12 passionate youth, trained to understand plastic pollution and develop impactful awareness campaigns. These young leaders have taken proactive steps in their municipalities, organizing river cleanups and community awareness events that highlight the importance of proper plastic segregation and disposal. Their efforts exemplify the transformative power of youth, as they mobilize their peers and inspire collective action.

Complementing our youth engagement efforts is the Waste Smart School Initiative, implemented in 12 community schools across 7 municipalities in the Bagmati and Madhesh Provinces. This initiative focuses on reducing waste and promoting recycling while educating students about sustainable practices.

A vital component of this initiative is the formation of Waste Smart Clubs—student-led groups dedicated to environmental stewardship. Through these clubs, students learn to organize events and engage their peers in activities aimed at minimizing waste. This hands-on approach fosters leadership skills and instills a sense of responsibility for their environment, nurturing a generation of eco-conscious citizens.

Enhancing the educational experience is the Waste Smart Museum, which provides students with interactive learning opportunities related to waste management and recycling. By engaging directly with demonstrations that illustrate the lifecycle of materials, students not only retain information better but also develop positive habits that contribute to a sustainable future.

In addition, CREASION has established e-libraries in 10 schools across various districts, providing access to a wealth of digital resources—including e-books, journals, and videos. Launched on July 1, 2024, these e-libraries have directly reached 1,875 children and indirectly impacted 4,641 others, making learning more engaging and accessible.

The collaboration between Project CAP, young leaders, and school initiatives demonstrates the power of grassroots movements in addressing environmental issues. As we reflect on these efforts this World Clean Up Day, let us acknowledge the remarkable contributions of our youth and the initiatives that empower them.

Their commitment to creating a cleaner, more sustainable future is inspiring. By fostering a generation dedicated to protecting our planet, we amplify their voices and encourage collective action for environmental change.

Together, we can ensure a plastic-free future for our communities. Let’s unite in our efforts to create lasting change and celebrate the collaborative spirit of youth and education in shaping a sustainable world and making room for life!
