From Waste to Wealth: Chankhey Majhi’s Inspiring Journey with the CAP Project!

Meet Chankhey Majhi, a 28-year-old waste collector from Golanjor Rural Municipality. For the past four years, he’s been collecting waste for the municipality, but something changed after he attended a training session by the CAP Project in August 2024.

Before the training, Chankhey and his team would collect waste and dump it at the landfill site without segregation. But after learning about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and the project’s linkage with waste aggregators, he saw an opportunity. Now, he and his team segregate recyclable waste like PET bottles and sell them to aggregators.

This new practice has become an additional source of income for Chankhey. He earns an average of Rs. 875 per week (Rs. 3500/month) by selling recyclables, on top of his regular job. He even saves Rs. 900 monthly in a local cooperative for his family’s future. 💪

Chankhey shared, “I learned how plastic pollution harms our environment. Plastic is everywhere, but we need to reduce single-use plastics. Now, I’m not just collecting waste—I’m turning it into income while helping the planet.”

The CAP Project is empowering marginalized communities like Chankhey’s, providing training and ensuring dignity of labor for informal waste workers. Together, we’re building a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive future!
