In the heart of Golanjor, a quiet yet powerful story unfolds through the life of Ms. Pamfa Ramtel, a determined waste picker who has turned her struggles into a source of strength. On August 22, 2024, Pamfa attended a Capacity Building Training and Workshop organized by Project CAP, a moment that marked a turning point in her life—a moment filled with hope and possibility.
Pamfa’s journey began out of love and necessity. To support her husband, Mr. Dil Bahadur Ramtel, she took on the difficult role of collecting discarded PET bottles from her community. Each day, she walks the streets, her hands working tirelessly to gather what many consider trash. For Pamfa, these bottles are not just waste; they are a lifeline. With every bottle she collects, she imagines a better future for her family—a future built on her hard work and determination.
But this path is not easy. Pamfa faces the harsh reality of earning only 15-20 rupees per kilogram for her collection. As she walks the familiar routes, the weight of her labor often feels heavier than the bottles she carries. The long hours and low pay can be disheartening, but Pamfa’s spirit remains unbroken. She finds joy in the small victories, knowing that each bottle is a step toward supporting her loved ones.
Hope shines brightly on the horizon with the establishment of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) by Project CAP. This facility promises to change everything for Pamfa. Currently, she travels long distances to sell her bottles, often sacrificing time and energy that could be spent gathering more. With the MRF, she envisions a future where she can work more efficiently, allowing her to collect even more and, hopefully, earn a fairer wage. The MRF will not only streamline Pamfa's recycling process but also provide her with a stable income, empowering her to improve her family's quality of life. Pamfa's resilience and determination serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges in their communities.
The Capacity Building Training and Workshop she attended was a revelation for Pamfa. Surrounded by others who understand her struggles, she felt a sense of belonging and solidarity. The training equipped her with new skills and inspired her to dream bigger. For Pamfa, this was more than just a workshop; it was a reminder that her work matters and that she is part of a community striving for dignity and empowerment. Pamfa's newfound confidence and skills have allowed her to take on leadership roles within her community, advocating for change and progress. She continues to be a beacon of hope for those around her, showing that with determination and support, anything is possible.
Pamfa’s story is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of hope. She embodies the strength of those who refuse to be defined by their circumstances. Through her hard work, she not only provides for her family but also contributes to the well-being of her community. She reminds us all that dignity can be found in even the most challenging situations, and that every small effort can lead to meaningful change.
As she continues her journey, Pamfa is a shining example of what it means to turn discarded items into treasures, both literally and metaphorically. She teaches us to see the value in the overlooked and to recognize the potential for hope and renewal in our lives. In her hands, every bottle represents a story—a story of perseverance, love, and the unwavering belief that a brighter future is possible. Through her work, Pamfa not only transforms waste into art but also inspires others to see the beauty and potential in everything around them. Her dedication to creating positive change serves as a powerful reminder that we all have the ability to make a difference, no matter how small our actions may seem.
